Early Life and EducationGabriel Conroy Harte was born on August 25, 1836, in Albany, New York.
Due to health issues and frequent relocations, his formal education ended in 1849, when he began working at the age of 13.
Literary Beginnings
Harte's first poem, "Autumn Musings," appeared in the newspaper "Sunday Morning" in 1847. In 1854, he moved with his sister to San Francisco, where his writings began to take shape.
California Experiences
From 1858, Harte lived in Uniontown, Humboldt Bay, working odd jobs until becoming a reporter for the newly established "Northern Californian" in 1869.
His bold article criticizing the massacre of Native Americans at Mud Creek forced him to leave the town.
