The balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet: perhaps the most iconic scene in the entire play. It’s the scene that everyone remembers, and everyone has a different vision of. I’m going to be shining a little light on two adaptations of this scene: the 1968 movie version, and the 1996 movie version.

First, let’s look at the scenery.

In the older movie, the location is the same as the original play: Verona, Italy. It has the iconic balcony, a garden with bushes and trees, and is set in the time period of the original play.

In the newer movie, the location is a fictional city named “Verona

Beach”. Contrast to the older movie, there is no balcony where Juliet stands, there is a pool instead of a garden, and the time period is modern day. The reason, I believe, for the change is the director for the 1996 movie wanted to make a more relatable  version of Romeo and Juliet by making it look like modern times.
